Sixteen Tons: Sludge from Oakland, CA

An interesting new band to watch is Sixteen Tons, out of Oakland, California.  They have released a demo track, ‘King of the Streets’, which I have included below.  Low, heavy and slow, this 5-piece has been in operation for a couple of years and clearly plays a pretty tight brand of doom metal sludge.  They betray their Weedeater, Sabbath, Electric Wizard influences a bit, but on the limited basis of the demo track they make their music with enough originality and professionalism to allow it to stand up on its own.

As I’ve said many times before, there are just so many wannabe stoner/sludge bands out there who think that playing slow metal will guarantee them an audience, but who don’t really know how to compose or sequence a coherent song structure.  These guys are different – they are immediately listenable! I’m looking forward to hearing more from Sixteen Tons, and we’ll let you know when we do.

  1. Thank you for the kind review. We have been fully formed band for around 3 months and are working hard on the next tracks. Stay tuned, and thank you!!
